Dab Rigs / Oil Rigs
What are dab rigs? Well they’re not magic… but it sure feels that way!
To consume cannabis (extracts/concentrates), also known as ‘dabbing’, a specific pipe called a dab rig is required. The term ‘rig’ is simply a name for pipes that are made to vaporize rather than combust cannabis. Depending on where you live in the world, Dab rigs are also referred to as: concentrate pipes, concentrate rigs, rigs, vapor rigs, water pipes, oil rigs, and oilers. Dab rigs work differently than bongs. When using a bong flower is combusted, resulting in a harsher, hotter smoke that needs room to travel and has a higher resistance to dissipation. Concentrates on the other hand, are vaporized, resulting in a cooler, more fragile vapor that dissipates quickly and holds flavor more intensely than flower does.
A big part of the dabbing is experiencing the unique flavor profile of each concentrate. Less percolation helps to intensify the flavor of your hit. So dab rigs are designed for minimal diffusion. Also different to bongs, most dab rigs tend to be on the smaller side. Since concentrate vapor dissipates more quickly it needs to travel a shorter distance in order to stay potent and flavorful. Dab rigs are designed with condensed chambers in order to quickly and easily direct the vapor up and directly to your lungs. Think of it this way, the smaller the chamber the less volume, less volume means less water, space and oxygen your vapor has to move through. As a result you vapor has less time to dissipate and will retain its potency and keep the flavor.
In place of a bowl, dab rigs have a nail that you heat with a handheld torch or an Electric Nail (Enail). Once hot, you ‘dab’ a small amount of your extract onto the nail. The concentrate then flashes into a delicious vapor at the bottom of your pipe and starts to make its way up. Get ready, inhale and smile. Dab Rigs, they’re not magic …but it sure feels that way sometimes. HAH – who am I kidding? It feels that way EVERYTIME!
